Robotic Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery Recovery Time :Robotic Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery in India

Benefits of Robotic Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery

In addition to avoiding the pain and trauma of sternotomy and rib spreading, robotic mitral valve repair may provide patients with the following benefits over open surgery:
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusions
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Significantly less pain and scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities
  • And a potentially better clinical outcome
Please note that not all patients are candidates for robotic surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with the most appropriate treatment option after thoroughly assessing your condition.

WHAT IS THE MITRAL VALVE?

The mitral valve controls blood flow through the left side of the heart. When it opens, the mitral valve allows blood to flow into the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber. When the left ventricle contracts, the mitral valve closes in order to prevent blood from flowing back toward the lungs.
Sometimes the mitral valve is abnormal from birth. It can also become damaged by infection, with age or from heart disease.

WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE?

If the mitral valve leaflets cannot tightly seal the left ventricle, this is called prolapse. With mitral valve prolapse, some blood flows back into the atrium – a condition called regurgitation. Regurgitation can make the heart work harder, leading to further valve damage and increasing the risk of heart failure.

MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE TREATMENT OPTIONS

The treatment options available to a person with mitral valve prolapse depend on the severity of your condition. Some patients may not require any intervention. Others may be prescribed medications. However, if your symptoms become severe, your doctor may recommend mitral valve prolapse surgery. There are two basic types of valve prolapse surgery:

Valve Replacement  - In valve replacement, your surgeon cuts out the damaged valve and replaces it with a new, artificial valve.

Valve Repair  - Valve repair involves the surgeon reconstructing your valve using your own tissues.

Robot Assisted Heart Procedures are done to treat a variety of conditions:

1. Robot Assisted Mitral Valve Repair may be used to treat:
  • Stenosis (narrowing) of the mitral valve
  • Regurgitation (leakage) of the mitral valve
2. Robot Assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) may be used to treat
  • Blockages in the heart's arteries
  • Severe chest pain ( angina ) that has not improved with medicines
3. Robot-assisted Atrial Septal defect repair may be used to treat a hole between the upper chambers of the heart that does not close properly during foetal development.
4. Robot-assisted Biventricular Pacemaker lead placement may be used to treat heart failure due to Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm in the upper chambers of the heart)

An Alternative to Open-Heart Surgery

If your doctor recommends surgery to treat mitral valve prolapse, you may be a candidate for robotically assisted closed-chest heart surgery, potentially the most effective and least invasive treatment option. Robotically assisted minimally invasive mitral valve repair is an alternative to conventional open heart surgery. This mitral valve repair is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System®, enabling your surgeon to operate with precision through a few small incisions.
In addition to avoiding the pain and trauma of cracking open the breastbone to access the heart through a traditional sternotomy and rib spreading, robotically assisted minimally invasive mitral valve repair may provide patients with the following benefits over open-heart surgery:
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusions
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Significantly less scarring
  • Faster recovery from pain
  • Quicker return to normal activities
  • Potentially better clinical outcome
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific. While robotically assisted minimally invasive mitral valve repair is considered safe and effective, it may not be appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.

FAQs : Robotic Surgery in India is the Latest and Most Advanced Technique in the World

This is a surgery performed by surgeons using a computer that controls very small instruments attached to a robot. It is therefore, also referred to as computer assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS).
Robotic surgery is safe and is performed through very small incisions (fingertip size). Robot itself does not perform surgery, though the name so indicates, this surgery is performed by a surgeon who is assisted by a robot and a computer console. Hence, it’s the surgeon’s dexterity and experience that is key for success of this advance surgical technique

For this procedure, surgeon sits at a console (computer), from where he controls the movements of fine instruments attached to the robotic arms. Robot acts exactly the way the surgeon does sitting at the console, hence the robotic instruments are under the control of the surgeon – the only difference being that the surgeon’s hands do not directly touch the human body during the surgery.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery as compared with traditional methods of surgery?

Robotic surgery is technologically more advanced thus it helps surgeons conduct complex surgeries with ease. Robotic arms are steadier, more precise and can access the interior of the human body much easily than a human hand can. Thus, this surgery provides greater precision, increased motion range, improved dexterity to surgeons

Also the 3D view provided by the camera captures more than a human eye can, thus the enhanced visualization due to 3D effect improves access, quality of surgery and its outcome From patients perspective some of the benefits include-

·         precise operation with higher accuracy
·         shorter hospital stay
·         less pain
·         lower risk of infection
·         less blood loss, thus fewer transfusions
·         less scarring with minimal incisions
·         faster functional recovery

What are the benefits of robotic surgery as compared with traditional methods of surgery?

There are three kinds of robots-
·         Active robots – these robots are self operated and do not require any command or manual support to function
·         Semi active robots – these robots need some degree of manual support to function
·         Master slave robots – as the name suggests, these robots are totally dependent on manual support.

What is the role of the surgeon in robotic surgery?

Like all traditional surgeries, in case of robotic surgery too it is an experienced surgeon who creates successful outcomes. It is the surgeon who conducts these surgeries using a robot and a computer to guide his actions, and he keeps control on all the surgical procedures. Though robot enables technologically advanced actions, they are incapable of replacing a qualified experienced surgeon, thus robot is more of an enabling tool for a deft surgeon.

On an average, a robotic procedure costs about INR 50,000 – 75,000 more than an open/traditional surgery. Since robot is expensive, the additional cost of the surgery is directly attributable to the robotic instruments used for performing the procedure.

All other costs associated remain the same as compared to any conventional, open or laparoscopic surgery.

At a minimal additional cost, patients benefit with precise operations involving less complications, scarring, blood loss, reduced hospital stay and faster functional recovery- advantages that ensure better quality of life

Is there any difference in the length of stay of the patients undergoing robotic surgery?

Compared to an open surgery, the length of hospital stay for a patient undergoing robotic surgery is much less. Such patients are usually discharged within 2-3 days

Is there a difference in anesthesia given for robotic surgery?

No, the anesthesia remains the same.

Traditionally minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques are most commonly used for routine procedures, but these techniques have their limitations of standard 2D video and rigid instruments that surgeons have to use. Laparoscopic instruments and the video monitor do not provide surgeons with quality visualization required to perform complex surgeries. Through robotic surgery it becomes easier and less time consuming in order to perform complex surgeries.
Considering the limitations of traditional laparoscopic surgical techniques, a new & more advanced technique of minimally invasive surgery is a very effective alternative

What surgeries can be performed with robotic assistance?

Most advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures using da Vinci SI HD surgical system. Some the surgeries that can be performed using robot are-
·         Robotic Cardiac Surgery for coronary bypass, implantation of lead, valve repair & valve replacement, congenital defects
·         Robotic Urology Surgery for prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, adrenal tumors, nephrectomy, reconstruction of urinary bladder
